President Salva Kiir needs to expedite the unification of forces or else any further delay could only prove that “the president is his own worst enemy”.

The forces are currently going through hell at the moment and it is a frustrating period for most of them. The frustration, including cases of death; however, the worst-case scenario could backfire on the president and his administration.

The stagnation of the graduation of the Forces continues to drag on and disheartening. The RJMEC has noted as such. And the other day, in a report seen by NCMP, a trainee committed suicide out of frustration in Rajap Police Services training center in Juba. Many of the trainees can take care of their immediate needs.

The opposition forces and governments continue to languish in cantonment sites and training centers without prospects of passing out soon. While the opposition forces are not coming in, the government forces go without salaries for months.

The president and those who advises him are trying to frustrate the training and unification of forces so that the soldiers in cantonments may give and call it a quit, but that only makes the presidents his own worst enemy.

As observed, maybe the president is not interested in the unification and If the intention is to frustrate the forces in the cantonment sites and training centers so that they disperse, it is a wrong strategy. Where are these forces going after deserting the centers? Isn’t it to where they came from?

Or maybe the president wants them to deflect to his side as we have seen in recent times. But unfortunately, too, the government’s forces also are owed several months’ salaries. Definitely, the frustrated forces can never desire to be under his Command and Control.

The Opposition [parties] seems willing(Though their willingness is quite understandable) and working for their forces in cantonment sites and training centers to be graduated and Unified with their colleagues in the SSPDF and they be under one command, but the would be Salva Kiir is reluctant.

As a national leader, no longer a rebel leader or leader of a particular tribe or party, it should be in best interest for the president to see all forces unified under his command.

A country like South Sudan that is washed by arms and ammunition, need not have parallel forces. The peace agreement has detailed arrangements for the country’s security arrangements but why President Kiir is failing to implement it proves the fact that he is continually becoming his own worst enemy.

Kiir needs to know that it is not right to have many Commanders-In-Chief in one government. That was the whole purpose of the Unification of Forces. The Peace Agreement negotiators made it a big case and 8 months period in the Agreement was set to complete these tasks. But unfortunately, Kiir government that is part of all the negotiations are now dragging their feet to implement it.

The non-implementation of the agreement put Kiir’s government at risk and also put a question mark on Kiir’s leadership capacity.

Though it seems Kiir wants to enjoy an absolute monopoly of force (violence) in the country, that way he continues to be his worst enemy because in the absence of Unification of Forces his mission as a leader is in futility.

Is it the question of lack of capacity? Some observers are already calling for complete new leadership for South Sudan.

The international community also needs to examine this option and many more options to get President Kiir to cease being his own worst enemy for the sake of South Sudan’s future.
