Ethiopia starts road construction to connect Assab Port

The Melodoni-Manda-Bure road project, which connects Ethiopia with Eritrea’s border starts today. The project is aimed to connect the new and wider 71 km length road Eritrea built and finished last year.

Eritrea finished the new 71 km asphalt road connecting from Ethiopian border in Bure to the port of Assab within two years (pictured). The construction cost of the project was covered by the Eritrean government and internal resources. The completion of the Melodononi -Manda-Bure road to Assab port will play a key role in facilitating Ethiopia’s better export trade. Chinese Shandong Liquino Group, a contractor, won the bid at a cost of Birr 2,085,985,162 to build the remaining 71.65 km within Ethiopia.

Construction consulting and supervision of the new Ethiopian road will be provided by Smek International and Valuation Engineering as subcontractors. The construction cost of the project will be covered by the Ethiopian government. The asphalt road, which was less than 6 meters wide, will be 19 meters wide in the cities areas and 10 meters wide in the rural areas.

Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport, Ms Dagmawit Moges, Chief Administrator of Afar regional state, Awel Arba, and other government officials launched the project today.
